What's New: Fitting Tips

Should YOU play graphite or steel shafts in your irons?  Seems like we get asked that question in every iron fitting.  With 39% of our golfers saying they are looking for new irons this coming year, I thought I would answer that question with a couple of our fitting principles. First of all, shaft weight is one of the most important factors in fitting irons.  I don’t care if you are “getting older” or not!  The shaft weight has to help you optimize your consistency, distance and accuracy. The lines are REALLY blurring these days between steel and graphite iron shaft weights, especially in the 95 to 110 gram weight.  That weight class is were a lot of golfers either move from steel to graphite, or as juniors get stronger, move from graphite to steel.  As a point of reference, traditional Dynamic Gold S300 shafts weigh roughly 130 grams, KBS Tour around 125, and Project X LZ Steel  from 110-125.  All steel shaft manufacturers have made lighter weight models, i.e. the KBS Tour 90, True Temper XP 95 to offer lighter shaft options.  Nippon makes their MODUS3 shafts in weights from 105 – 130.  See more light weight steel shaft options here.  The numbers... Heavy Graphite Iron Shafts Make It Easier to Switch From Steel As trends go, the move to heavy graphite iron shafts is intensifying.  I am talking about iron shafts that are in the 90 to 125 gram range.  This weight range is directly targeting golfers that have traditionally played standard weight steel and are looking for options in lighter weights and less vibration on off-center hits.   Book a personal fitting now to see if a heavy graphite shaft may fit your swing. Which Golf Clubs are the Most Difficult to Hit? We did a survey of golfers on our website and the results are in.  While it is neck-and-neck between driver, 3 fairway wood and long irons, 75% of our golfers said one of those clubs are the most difficult to hit!  So now the question is why? Longer Clubs Mean More Inconsistency The driver is the longest club in your bag while the 3 wood is the next longest.  In our fittings, the driver is usually the most difficult club to fit, mostly because it is the longest and lightest club in the bag.  If you don’t get the shaft weight, length, flex and swing weight right, shots will be inconsistent at best.  This goes for both driver and fairway woods.  That is why we recommend shorter driver shafts, i.e. 44.5″ versus industry standard 45 to 45.5″.  Check the impact area on the face of your driver.  If you are hitting mostly center to heel, your driver could be too long and/or light. KBS TGI Tour Graphite Iron Gets First Tour Victory Lydia Ko captured her first LPGA Tour victory in over two years with her win at the LPGA MEDIHEAL Classic.  Not only is she a member of PXG Troops with a full bag of PXG woods, irons and wedges, but she put the new KBS TGI Tour 80 gram shafts in her irons.   This is KBS’ first win on any tour with its new graphite irons.  The KBS TGI Tour 80 profiles very similar to the KBS Tour 90 steel shaft and can be tipped to play slightly stiffer. Picking the Right Hybrid Shaft Picking the right hybrid shaft is very important, especially when replacing long irons.  According to our current poll, 35% of our golfers say the WORST club(s) in their bag are their long irons.  So, maybe new hybrids are in order. (see our related blog post on long irons here). What Driver Length Should YOU Play? In our experience over the last twenty years, we have seen off-the-shelf driver lengths go from 43 inches to 48 inches, the maximum allowable by the USGA, and back to somewhere around 45 inches.  The holy grail for most golfers is increased distance off the tee.  With the USGA governing the rebound effect off the face of the driver (CT), it seems logical that adding length to the driver creates a longer swing arc and therefore more club head speed.  But, if you do not hit the sweet spot on the face of the driver, you will actually LOSE distance because the efficiency (smash factor) will drop and you will generate less ball speed.  In fact, the winner of the 2018 Masters used a driver that is 44.5 inches long and the 2nd place finishers driver length was 44.5 inches as well.  Check out our list of 2018 stock drivers at the end of this blog.
