Should YOU Play Graphite or Steel Shafts in Your Irons?

March 24th, 2026

Should YOU play graphite or steel shafts in your irons?  Seems like we get asked that question in every iron fitting.  With 39% of our golfers saying they are looking for new irons this coming year, I thought I would answer that question with a couple of our fitting principles. First of all, shaft weight is one of the most important factors in fitting irons.  I don’t care if you are “getting older” or not!  The shaft weight has to help you optimize your consistency, distance and accuracy. The lines are REALLY blurring these days between steel and graphite iron shaft weights, especially in the 95 to 110 gram weight.  That weight class is were a lot of golfers either move from steel to graphite, or as juniors get stronger, move from graphite to steel.  As a point of reference, traditional Dynamic Gold S300 shafts weigh roughly 130 grams, KBS Tour around 125, and Project X LZ Steel  from 110-125.  All steel shaft manufacturers have made lighter weight models, i.e. the KBS Tour 90, True Temper XP 95 to offer lighter shaft options.  Nippon makes their MODUS3 shafts in weights from 105 – 130.  See more light weight steel shaft options here.  The numbers... What Driver Length Should YOU PLay?

March 10th, 2026

The holy grail for most golfers is increased distance off the tee, but what driver length should you play to optimize distance?  With the USGA governing the rebound effect off the face of the driver (CT), it seems logical that adding length to the driver creates a longer swing arc and therefore more club head speed.  In our experience over the last twenty years, we have seen off-the-shelf driver lengths go from 43 inches to 46 inches, the maximum allowable by the USGA in most tournaments, and back to somewhere around 45 inches.  But, if you do not hit the sweet spot on the face of the driver, you will actually LOSE distance because the efficiency (smash factor) will drop and you will generate less ball speed.  The average driver length on the PGA Tour is 44.5 inches.  Check out our list of 2026 stock drivers at the end of this blog and their respective stock lengths. So, how do you determine YOUR optimum driver length?  There are several factors that you should consider: Schedule Your Driver Fitting Now! Arm length and Posture. In both our BGF Fitting System and the TrueFitClubs Fitting Wizard, we use wrist-crease-to-floor measurement to determine... Read More

Heavy Graphite Iron Shafts Make It Easier to Switch From Steel

February 23rd, 2026

Heavy Graphite Iron Shafts Make It Easier to Switch From Steel As trends go, the move to heavy graphite iron shafts is intensifying.  I am talking about iron shafts that are in the 90 to 125 gram range.  This weight range is directly targeting golfers that have traditionally played standard weight steel and are looking for options in lighter weights and less vibration on off-center hits.   Book a personal fitting now to see if a heavy graphite shaft may fit your swing. Less Vibration but the Feel of Steel A lot of players are looking for less vibration to alleviate pain from arthritic hands, golfer elbow or shoulder soreness.  Simply switching to a graphite shaft can reduce vibration over 30%.  Adding a softer grip like a Winn grip can help as well.  But, to keep the feel at impact of steel you need some material advantage.  Aerotech SteelFiber i95 and i110 shafts are the industry leaders in that regard.  Their shafts include steel fibers to improve the consistency and feel of those shafts.   New models include the FC 90 and FC 115.  The Veylix Arcane 100 includes some copper threads to achieve this feel as well.  The Mitsubishi Chemical Golf... Fairway 3 Wood is Dead! Long Live the 3 Wood off the Tee…

Hitting a 3 wood off the fairway is dead!  But, hitting a 2 or 3 wood off the tee is crazy good these days.

Golf Set Make-Up Recommendations

February 10th, 2026

Getting your Golf Set Make-Up right for you is key to having fun and scoring well on the course!  With 14 clubs in your bag, including your putter, selecting the right 13 clubs is key! Twenty years ago, the traditional set make-up was Driver, 3 wood, 5 wood, 3 iron through pitching wedge, sand wedge and a putter.  That left an extra spot for another iron or wedge.  Wow, are those days gone! Here is what has happened in the last several year: Hybrid clubs (thank Adams Golf for these!) Gap Wedges (stronger lofted irons made these a necessity) Higher Lofted Fairway Woods (Remember the Callaway Heaven Wood?) Mini Drivers (Can’t hit a 3 wood?  Need More Control off the tee?) Our recommendations below are based upon three things:  Strength, Skill Level and Comfort. Strength Stronger players will typically play lower lofted drivers, maybe a mini-driver, a fairway wood, hybrid, 4 iron – PW and a couple more wedges.  Stronger players have no trouble getting the ball in the air so it is more about distance control.  Slower swings require higher lofts to get the ball airborne and be able to land the ball softly on the green. Skill... Read More

The Most Important Club Fitting Numbers

January 29th, 2026

When you go through a professional golf club fitting, you can get overwhelmed with the numbers a launch monitor can spit out.  We are going to break it down to the most important club fitting numbers and how they affect your distance, accuracy and consistency! Before I dive into the numbers, I do want to clarify that we believe the shaft can make THE most significant difference in performance.  The proper length, shaft weight, shaft flex, trajectory, spin and swing weight will help you cut 2 to 20 strokes off your game! We use TrackMan for our club fitting so we will use their terminology to be consistent.  TrackMan has 36 different parameters but we will only use the 12 most important numbers based upon our thousands of fittings.  We will assume a right handed golfer in these notes. Book a Lifetime Complete Fitting! Attack Angle  This is the upward or downward movement of the club at maximum compression.  Ok, you must swing up on a driver and putter to get optimum spin, but swing down on all other clubs (fairways, hybrids, irons and wedges) to get maximum compression for distance.  A good Attack Angle for a driver is +1... Play Great Golf in 2026 – Here are Our Seven Tips!

January 4th, 2026

If you want to play great golf in 2026, start with the best equipment fit for YOUR swing!   As you reflect on 2025 and look forward to 2026, if you are like most of us, there is room for improvement!  Even the tour pros spend a lot of time with their coaches analyzing their rounds and making a plan to improve.  We know it takes proper technique, practice and the right equipment fit to YOUR swing.   Analytics and More One of the top degrees coming out of college these days is Data Analyst.  The era of “Big Data” is here, even in the golf industry.  When Mark Broadie wrote “Every Shot Counts” in 2014, it was used very little on the PGA Tour.  Now, Strokes Gained is used and commented on regularly by tour players, analysts, and commentators.   Golf Digest recently published this article on how analytics are being used on tour!   The results have been pretty dramatic for several players!  So, take a look at your scorecards and find out where you are losing strokes.  Missed fairways?  OB?  Poor iron shots?  Short-siding your wedges?  Putting letting you down?  If You Have ARCCOS Golf, USE IT! The use of... Read More

Is Golf TOO Poplular? How Golf Has Grown

January 1st, 2026

How Golf Has Grown We started D’Lance Golf during the “Tiger Boom” when there were roughly 26 million golfers in the United States, according to the National Golf Foundation.  Through a number of economic cycles and real estate booms and busts, golf participation started dropping and was hovering a little over 20 million for several years. Well, things have changed dramatically.  It actually started before the pandemic around 2018.  Top Golf and other simulator venues, i.e. “screen golf” fanned the popularity of golf.  Junior golf and participation of female golfers has climbed as well.  We are now around 29 million golfers versus 26 million in 1998.  But, the biggest change in my view is that, if you count golfers that do not actually play on a course but just practice or hit indoors, the participation is up to 39 million!  Whoa!  And, again according to NGF, the number of people that are interested in golf or are engaged in watching or working in the industry is up to 134 million! Golf as Entertainment Let’s face it.  Golf is not an easy sport.  So, companies are trying to lighten up the venues and add interesting formats to capture a wider audience. ... Read More
