Getting your Golf Set Make-Up right for you is key to having fun and scoring well on the course! With 14 clubs in your bag, including your putter, selecting the right 13 clubs is key!
Twenty years ago, the traditional set make-up was Driver, 3 wood, 5 wood, 3 iron through pitching wedge, sand wedge and a putter. That left an extra spot for another iron or wedge. Wow, are those days gone!
Here is what has happened in the last several year:
- Hybrid clubs (thank Adams Golf for these!)
- Gap Wedges (stronger lofted irons made these a necessity)
- Higher Lofted Fairway Woods (Remember the Callaway Heaven Wood?)
- Mini Drivers (Can’t hit a 3 wood? Need More Control off the tee?)
Our recommendations below are based upon three things: Strength, Skill Level and Comfort.
Strength
Stronger players will typically play lower lofted drivers, maybe a mini-driver, a fairway wood, hybrid, 4 iron – PW and a couple more wedges. Stronger players have no trouble getting the ball in the air so it is more about distance control. Slower swings require higher lofts to get the ball airborne and be able to land the ball softly on the green.
Skill Level
Better golfers have more distance control and more consistent shot dispersion so they can play a wider variety of clubs, including hybrids and fairway woods. Higher handicap golfers will benefit from more forgiving clubs throughout the bag.
Comfort
Probably the biggest area of angst in the golfers we fit is whether they feel more comfortable swinging hybrids or fairway woods, especially if the ones they are playing are not performing that well!
Our Set Make-Up Recommendations:
| Club | Tour Level | Stronger | Average | Slow Swing | High HCP | Beginner |
| Driver | 9 or 10.5* | 9 or 10.5* | 10.5 or 12* | 12 to 14* | 12* | 10.5 or 12 |
| Mini Driver | 11.5 to 13.5 | 13.5 | 13.5 | |||
| Fairway Wood #1 | 3 wood | 5 wood | 5 wood | 5 wood | 5 wood | 4 wood |
| Fairway Wood #2 | 7 wood | 7 wood | 7 wood | 7 wood | 7 wood | |
| Fairway Wood #3 | 9 wood | |||||
| Driving Iron | 2 or 3 iron | |||||
| Hybrid #1 | 3 hybrid | 4 hybrid | 6 hybrid | 5 hybrid | 4 hybrid | |
| Hybrid #2 | 5 hybrid | 6 hybrid | 5 hybrid | |||
| Hybrid #3 | ||||||
| Longest Iron | 4 iron | 5 iron | 6 iron | 7 iron | 7 iron | 6 or 7 iron |
These recommendations are really a good starting point but the best thing to do is come in for a complete club fitting. We will do a thorough gap analysis so you wil know EXACTLY what distances you hit each club, your trajectory and descent angles and what clubs feel the most comfortable for your game!
