KBS TGI Tour Graphite Iron Gets First Tour Victory Lydia Ko captured her first LPGA Tour victory in over two years with her win at the LPGA MEDIHEAL Classic.  Not only is she a member of PXG Troops with a full bag of PXG woods, irons and wedges, but she put the new KBS TGI Tour 80 gram shafts in her irons.   This is KBS’ first win on any tour with its new graphite irons.  The KBS TGI Tour 80 profiles very similar to the KBS Tour 90 steel shaft and can be tipped to play slightly stiffer. TrackMan Face Impact Data Improves Fitting Results We have long known in our fitting process that face impact has a tremendous affect on distance and accuracy.   We have been touting for years that the “sweet spot” on a driver is not dead center, but slightly towards the toe and slightly above center.  Well, TrackMan is now helping us prove our theory!  TrackMan’s latest release of their Performance Center includes the ability to track the exact impact area on the face of the club for each club in your bag (putter coming this summer)!  I have been working on getting by driver dialed in and the picture at the left shows my “impact area” for about a dozen or so shots.  The smash factor is at 1.48, not bad for a guy of my handicap, but the detail show that those shots that are below center and slightly towards the heel drop to 1.45 or below.  What this means is that I am losing up to 15 yards by not hitting in the sweet spot!  Spin goes up, ball speed goes down and dispersion increases. Picking the Right Hybrid Shaft Picking the right hybrid shaft is very important, especially when replacing long irons.  According to our current poll, 35% of our golfers say the WORST club(s) in their bag are their long irons.  So, maybe new hybrids are in order. What Driver Length Should YOU Play? In our experience over the last twenty years, we have seen off-the-shelf driver lengths go from 43 inches to 48 inches, the maximum allowable by the USGA, and back to somewhere around 45 inches.  The holy grail for most golfers is increased distance off the tee.  With the USGA governing the rebound effect off the face of the driver (CT), it seems logical that adding length to the driver creates a longer swing arc and therefore more club head speed.  But, if you do not hit the sweet spot on the face of the driver, you will actually LOSE distance because the efficiency (smash factor) will drop and you will generate less ball speed.  In fact, the winner of the 2018 Masters used a driver that is 44.5 inches long and the 2nd place finishers driver length was 44.5 inches as well.  Check out our list of 2018 stock drivers at the end of this blog. Counter Balanced Driver Shafts are Hot! Counter balanced driver shafts are starting to be all the rage both on tour and in our clients hands.  Why?  Because most manufacturers of drivers are making their club heads much heavier these days and golfers do not want to feel like they are swinging a sledge hammer!  Tour pros like Tiger Woods, Justin Rose, and Rory McIlroy have opted for counter balanced shafts like the Mitsubishi Chemical Tensei CK Pro Orange in order to reduce total weight and increase club head speed (not that they need any help, mind you)!  With shafts that are counter balanced, swing weights can be reduced 2 to 3 points creating a lighter head feel and potentially generating more clubhead speed. Driver Head Weights Today As recently as 2015, driver head weights were pretty much right around 200 grams.  Today, we are seeing headweights of 203 grams consistently but some as high as 209.  Every 2 grams adds a swing weight so instead of a D0 at 45 inches, you may see D3 to D4.  The average golfer with a smooth tempo will like a lighter swing weight.  So, up until counter balanced driver shafts came along, you... Solving the Hybrid Vs. Long Iron Fitting Dilemma

Solving the hybrid vs. long iron fitting dilemma should not be a difficult decision.  In general there are a couple of factors to consider. First, how comfortable is the golfer in hitting hybrid clubs? I would say 20-30% of our golfers going through a fitting have trouble hitting their hybrids consistently.  Usually, it is because of the fact that the hybrids are not very well fit to them in terms of shaft flex and weight.  Unfortunately, sometimes this becomes a mental block that is difficult to overcome.  We get past that by having the golfer hit a hybrid that is matched to their swing and compare it to their existing hybrid.  This usually gets rid of the fear factor! Second, how well does the golfer hit their long(er) irons? This is a little bit of a trick question as most golfers want to keep a longer iron, like a 4 or 5 iron, in their bag to get out of trouble if they are under a tree branch.  But that is a total waste of a club.  I can easily knock down a 7 iron if I have to punch out.  If the golfer only hits the longest iron in... The Best Fairway Woods for 2018 Book Your Fitting Now! Well, the changes in the way the USGA measures the legality of drivers, fairway woods and hybrids have given some clubs a tremendous amount of added distance.  I did an article on this a few years ago and the major manufacturers have jumped on the change from COR to CT measurements.  I also had it confirmed by the senior product director at one of the major manufacturers.  The best new fairway woods will show increases of 1-4 mph in ball speed, reduced spin and higher launch angles.  The result is that now you can hit a higher lofted fairway wood, a 4 wood for example instead of a 3 wood and get the same or added distance. A Case Study One of our good customers was looking for a fairway wood that could carry a little farther with a better descent angle.  His current 3 wood carry distance was 251 yards at altitude.  We tested the new Tour Edge CBX, TaylorMade M4, and Rogue all in 4 woods.  The winner by two yards was the Callaway Rogue at 263 yards with a peak height of 98 feet and descent angle... PXG GEN2 Irons Are Setting the Performance Bar After three years of development and nearly 40 prototypes, the PXG GEN2 0311 irons are scheduled for release on April 19th!  Our demo irons should be here by the end of March and are we excited?  Yes! In addition to the latest innovations for the 0311 P, 0311 T and 0311 XF, there is a new iron in the mix, the 0311 SGI (Super Game Improvement).  Let me give you a rundown of the innovations that have gone into these new irons. Performance Improvements Tighter Shot Dispersion Increased Distance Better Top Line Appearance Improved Feel Better Wearing Material The Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE) in the original 0311 has been replaced with COR2, a proprietary high speed polymer core material.  This material has shown to create tighter shot dispersion (distance dispersion) and improved feel off the face.  In addition, COR2 has increased ball speed 1-2 mph due to its faster recovery time. Get the Right Shaft to Hit Your Driver Straight and Long We always advise you on what happens when golf shafts are not right for your swing.  A lot of golfers that have never been through our fitting process, think that the majority of their miss-hits are caused by their swing.  Fortunately, that is not always the case!  We help golfers of all abilities hit longer, straighter drives by selecting the proper length, shaft weight, shaft flex, swing weight and shaft profile (trajectory and spin) for their unique swing. First off, you will NOT be happy with clubs bought off-the-rack, regardless of how they tested in the shop.  The consistency of shaft flexes and weights from one club and one manufacturer to another is not very good.  Each year we find shafts that play very soft or very stiff to the stated flex resulting in poor performance.
