Get  your 2022 clubfitting while your swing is still grooved!  Now that the season in the northern climates of the world is getting a little cooler, take an introspective look at your game and then go get a good clubfitting.  Don’t wait until 2022 as there are a lot of new head, shaft and grip options hitting the market this fall, and your swing is still in good shape from playing this season. We Fit YOUR Game The first thing you should do is take a look at where you were successful (putting, chipping, driving?) and where you struggled (hybrids, distance gaps, accuracy with irons?).  Be honest and think about where you lost strokes and what happened (thin, fat, poor contact, slice, hook?).  Your fitter should ask you a lot of questions about your shots and what you want to accomplish:  Improved Accuracy?  Increased Distance?  More Consistency?  Then you should concentrate on what segments of your game are costing you the most strokes and eroding your confidence. Well, the search for distance is continuing with a lot of PGA Tour players following the lead of Bryson DeChambeau and Phil Mickelson.  Phil used a longer driver to win the 2021 PGA Championship.  See the details of his driver here.. The maximum USGA driver length is 48 inches, the same as the limit on the Long Drivers of America tour.  Each added inch can add 1-2 mph to your swing speed.  So, potentially, you could add 6 mph which can translate to 15 – 20 yards going from a 45 inch driver to a 48 inch driver.     Schedule YOUR Driver Fitting Here! Sign up for YOUR Driver Fitting Here!     Smash Factor and Ball Speed Smash factor is determined by dividing club speed into ball speed.  The optimum ratio is 1.5.  This means at a 100 mph driver speed, your ball speed will be 150 mph.  This is an efficiency rating of how much ball speed you are getting for your swing speed.  Smash factor is determined by where you are hitting the ball on the face, how “hot” the face is and how well the shaft is delivering energy to ball at impact.  The better the smash factor, the higher the ball speed which means more distance!  As the TrackMan optimizer shows, this player could be getting twenty more yards by getting a better smash factor. We fit a LOT of different golfers every year.  The shafts we put into their irons (and wedges) is determined by our BGF Fitting System, TrueFitClubs Fitting Wizard and player testing during the fitting. Our fitting recommendations include length of iron, shaft weight, shaft trajectory and spin profile, shaft flex, and swing weight.  Loft and lie are determined by launch monitor testing.  The recommendations are determined by a golfers physical characteristics (height, weight, wrist crease-to-floor), strength (distance), launch characteristics (actual and desired trajectory, spin, dispersion), and swing dynamics (tempo, transition and release point). We have been crafting combo sets of irons for our customers for over twenty years, but 2021 seems to be the year that major club manufacturers are actually specifically designing blended sets of irons for several categories of players.  Specifically, TaylorMade with their “P700” series and Callaway with their Apex line are making a big push for combo iron sets in 2021. What is a Combo Set Anyway? The theory behind the combo set is that longer irons are more difficult to hit so maybe a player should have a more forgiving club in their longer irons.  The usual route for higher handicap and slower swing speed golfers is to swap a hybrid in for say a 4 or 5 iron.  But if you are a better, stronger player, maybe you just need a little more forgiveness or versatility in the longer irons.
