Are Stock Shafts Any Good?

You could add 10 to 20 Yards to your Drives AND improve your accuracy.

We recently conducted some shaft tests with various drivers to see how much difference the shafts made versus a stock shaft.  The tests were conducted with five different drivers:

Adams Fast 10

Adams Speedline 9032LS

TaylorMade Superfast

Ping G15

Callaway FT-Tour

Three different driver shafts were tested and compared to the stock shaft in each driver.  The tests were done outdoors on a range at a temperature of 53 degrees and altitude of 8000 feet using Top Flite Range balls.  The golfer testing the shafts was a 15 handicap player and the shafts were matched to his swing.  The table below shows the results of the test:

The golfer doing the testing had a consistent negative attack angle which creates more spin than a positive attack angle so the increase in distance could easily have come from the reduced spin rate of the premium shafts over the stock shafts.  The increase in ball speed, while not great, combined with the lower spin rates created an extra 11 yards in distance while improving accuracy by 7.4 yards!  Basically, this golfer will be able to hit one less club into the green which will improve his ability to hit greens in regulation.
